Key Dates You Need to Know

January 26, 2026 – Tax Season Opens: The IRS begins accepting and processing 2025 federal tax returns.
February 2, 2026 – Document Deadline: Most W-2s and certain key 1099s (notably 1099-NEC) must be furnished by this date because January 31, 2026 falls on a Saturday.
April 15, 2026 – National Filing Deadline: This is the final day to file and pay federal income taxes (Form 1040) and to request an automatic extension (Form 4868). It is also generally the last day for 2025 IRA contributions and 2025 HSA contributions.
October 15, 2026 – Extension Filing Deadline: The final day to file your 2025 federal return if you requested an extension by April 15, 2026 (note: any tax owed is still due April 15 to avoid penalties and interest).
Note on State Deadlines: While many states follow the April 15 federal deadline, some states have different due dates. Verify your state’s deadline using the IRS state tax agency links below.

Important Note on Tax Extensions
Taxpayers should keep in mind that requesting an extension allows for additional time to file but not to pay taxes owed. Individuals who owe taxes should file their tax return and pay as soon as they can.
Interest and penalties grow daily. The longer a balance remains unpaid, the more these charges add up. Paying as early as possible is the best way to keep your total costs down.
